Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Dental veneers are porcelain- or resin-based stain-resistant shells designed to look like your natural teeth. They’re custom modified to fit over the front surface of each tooth to improve their appearance by creating a brighter and straighter smile.

Composite veneers, also called direct veneers, require only one visit to KRB Dentistry for application and can last up to seven years before needing replacement. Composite veneers are thinner than porcelain veneers and require less tooth surface removal before application.

Porcelain veneers, or indirect veneers, require two visits to KRB Dentistry because they’re custom-made to fit the impression or mold of your mouth that’s sent to the lab. These veneers usually cost more than composite veneers and can last up to 15 years. Porcelain veneers also tend to be more stain-resistant and natural-looking than their composites.

What is the process for getting veneers?

The procedure for getting veneers depends on which veneers you choose. If you select composite veneers, Dr. Kauser Bari or one of her associates at KRB Dentistry first removes some of the surfaces of the treated teeth and then applies the composite material. Next, they manually shape the material and harden it with a UV light. This procedure is called “chair-side” veneers.

To get the custom-made porcelain veneers, you visit KRB Dentistry twice. At the first appointment, your dentist takes X-rays and prepares your teeth for veneers by trimming your tooth enamel. Your dentist also takes a mold of your teeth and sends it to the lab to make your veneers.

Your veneers are delivered approximately two weeks later, and Dr. Bari or another dental professional at KRB Dentistry checks the fit and color. If you’re happy with your veneers, your dentist cleans your teeth before roughening the surface to improve the adhesion.

Whether you choose porcelain or composite veneers, your dentist attaches them to your teeth using a special cement, followed by the use of an ultraviolet light that quickly hardens it. Any excess material then gets removed, and your veneers get polished.

A few weeks later, you return to KRB Dentistry to ensure proper placement of your veneers.

Regardless of the type of veneers you choose, the dental staff at KRB Dentistry works hard to reduce your dental anxiety and ensure you’re satisfied with the final results.

How do you care for veneers?

Once the process of receiving your veneers is over, you may brush and floss them the same way as your regular teeth. Proper oral hygiene allows you to keep your veneers for as long as possible. The dentists at KRB Dentistry advise you to limit your consumption of coffee and other teeth-staining foods.
